Memberships
Updated Sep 18, 2026
A membership is a Stripe subscription attached to a person's record. Unlike an invoice, which you raise by hand as a one-off, a membership renews itself on the cadence you set until it's paused or canceled.
Setting one up
Open Finance → Memberships. If Stripe isn't connected yet, you'll see a banner with a Connect Stripe button instead of the plan and enrollment forms — connect it first.
- Under Subscription plans, choose + New plan. Enter a name, a price in CAD, and whether it bills Monthly or Annual, then choose Add plan. This creates a real product and price on your connected Stripe account — plans aren't a local list, they live in Stripe.
- Under Enroll & manage, pick the person from Select member…, pick the plan, then choose how they pay:
- Pick one of their saved cards from the third dropdown to bill it automatically each cycle.
- Leave it on Invoice by email and Stripe collects payment for each cycle without a card on file.
- Choose Enroll member.
Select member… only lists people who already have a Stripe customer id — that's created automatically the first time someone is invoiced or pays through Finance. Someone who has never been invoiced won't appear in the list yet; if the person you want isn't there, raise an invoice for them first, then come back and enroll them. If they don't have a Stripe customer id at all by the time you enroll them, GIG creates one automatically from the name and email on their record.
Enrolling sets the person's designation to Member — that's what makes them show up in the roster below and in Membership Metrics.
What happens each cycle
Stripe renews the subscription and charges the member's card, or invoices them by email, on the cadence the plan was created with. The same payments fee that applies to any other payment through your connected account is taken out of each membership charge too.
Pausing
Choose Pause on an active enrollment to stop billing without ending it. While paused, Stripe voids any invoice that would have been generated for that cycle — the member isn't charged and nothing accumulates to bill later. Choose Resume to pick billing back up on the plan's normal cadence.
Cancelling
There are two different actions that both say "cancel" something, and they don't do the same thing:
- Cancel, in the Enroll & manage table, ends the Stripe subscription immediately. It does not change the person's designation — they stay a Member even though they're no longer being billed.
- Close Membership, from the roster below (the "···" menu next to a member's row), does both: it cancels their Stripe subscription if one exists, and changes their designation from Member to Former Member. This is the one to use when someone is actually leaving — it's also the only action that removes them from the Active count in Membership Metrics.
Two other actions in that same "···" menu are worth knowing the real limits of, so you don't rely on them for something they don't do:
- Send Reminder does not currently send an email or any other notification to the member — it only records that a reminder was requested. There's nothing for the member to see yet.
- Resend Payment Link creates a fresh, one-time Stripe payment link for the member's current fee, but GIG does not email or otherwise deliver it to them. Generating the link is as far as the action goes today — you'd need to retrieve and send it yourself.
Membership metrics
Finance → Reports → Membership Metrics counts everyone designated Member or Former Member and shows Active, Former and lifetime totals, plus the full roster with its designation. It's a headcount, not a revenue report — the page says so itself: recurring-revenue and churn trends aren't built yet. It's restricted to owners and admins, not every Finance user with reports access.
