Build a form
Updated Sep 28, 2026
A form is built field by field in the form builder.
Adding fields
- Open Forms and choose the form, or create a new one.
- Add a field and pick its type.
- Give it a label. The label is what the person filling the form reads, so write it as a question.
- Mark it required if an answer is genuinely mandatory — a required field someone cannot answer is a form nobody finishes.
Help text
Every field can carry help text. It supports basic formatting and is the right place for the sentence that stops someone guessing.
Drafts and publishing
The builder saves as you go, to a draft. People filling in a published form keep seeing the version you last published, so a half-finished edit never reaches them.
- When your draft differs from what respondents see, the toolbar shows Unpublished changes.
- Publish changes makes the draft live. If it would delete a question that already has answers, or change a question's type, the questions are named first and nothing goes live until you confirm. Answers are never erased.
- Discard draft throws away your unpublished changes and goes back to the published version.
- Version history, in the toolbar or the Published menu, keeps the last ten published versions, with when and by whom. Restore puts one in your draft; it goes live when you publish.
Preview shows your draft. View the public form, in the Published menu, shows what respondents see now. Publishing, unpublishing and the submission deadline take effect straight away: they are not part of a version.
